Rise and Shine!

7 morning habits to start your day off right.

Do you feel like you get out of bed on the wrong side every day? If you’re not a morning person, the beginning of the day can be a struggle. You repeatedly hit snooze, crawl out of bed, rush around like a madman to get everyone out of the house, and feel half asleep until you’ve had a cup or two of coffee. Sadly for you, mornings are a part of life that can’t be avoided. So you may as well make the most of them.

If you’re tired of feeling tired in the morning and wish you could enjoy the sunrise, adopt the following habits to your morning routine.

1: Get an Early Start

Climbing out of bed earlier than usual may not be the kind of advice you want to hear, but give it a try for a week or two and see if it makes a difference. Before the rest of the family is awake, enjoy a few minutes in silence alone with your cup of coffee. It may be the only quiet time you have all day. Relax and prepare yourself mentally for the day ahead. Adding a few extra minutes to your morning routine will help the morning be less hectic.

2: Skip Snooze

When your alarm beeps, you have the choice to turn it off or hit snooze. Hitting snooze and falling back to sleep makes it harder to wake up when the alarm goes for a second or third time. Avoid this by turning off your alarm’s snooze capability. If you hate waking while in a deep sleep, download an app on your phone that monitors your sleep quality and wakes you up when you’re sleeping lightly.

4: Exercise

Exercise helps wake you up, boosts your energy, speeds your metabolism, and sets a healthy tone for the rest of the day. A morning workout also means you only have to shower once a day. When exercise is a regular part of your everyday morning routine, you’re more likely to stick with it. Waiting until later in the day leaves too much time for excuses and schedule conflicts. No wonder so many get their workouts in first thing each day!

5: Don’t Check Your Phone

It’s easy to get in the habit of checking your phone first thing in the morning. Emails, texts, and social media updates are all waiting, but try to wait until after you prepare for the day to check your phone. Otherwise, you’ll start the day stressed and overwhelmed with to-do lists, political opinions, and drama. Plus, how many times have you thought it would just take a second to check your phone, only to lose track of time and throw off your morning routine?

6: Plan Ahead

A big part of having a good morning is getting a good night’s rest. Don’t expect to feel cheery and energized in the morning after getting less than seven to nine hours of sleep. For morning habits to change, bedtime habits may also need to change. Before hitting the hay, do a little morning prep. Lay out clothes, set out the kids’ backpacks, and pack lunches. Doing these tasks the night before gives you a headstart on the morning.

7: See the Sunshine

The darkness tells your body to produce melatonin that makes you sleepy, and the sun tells your body it’s time to wake up. If you struggle to start the day, turn on lights and open the blinds first thing in the morning to let in as much sunlight as possible. Because a bright morning is a cheery morning!
